Award Winner 2017 Victorian Architecture Awards Residential Architecture Houses - New
A small house for a narrow site in an inner city suburb set amongst houses from the 1890's resulted a reappraisal of the qualities of the terrace house.
Room qualities, sizes and how the client uses them were investigated and tested to establish an appropriate design direction. This led to a house which moves against the often to easily accepted approach of the open plan by reinterpreting how rooms are separated or connected both internally and externally.
Quality of light cannot be underestimated. As such the size and placement of windows to each room was assessed to maintain a quality of space that is particular to a terrace house while also providing ample natural light. The facade opens and can be closed down to provide protection from solar heat gain living spaces will be comfortable and light filled.
